Native peoples of Canada strangers in their own land?

After thousands of years of survival in what is now Canada and the creation of many distinct cultures and traditions, the Native peoples have, in essence, become strangers in their own land. And, to make matters worse, they are strangers to most non-Native Canadians as well.

For those of us who are not Aboriginal, what is our image of these members of Canadian society? For many of us it might be a Mohawk warrior standing nose to nose with a member of the Canadian military during an armed standoff at Oka in 1990. Others may have memories of watching Native ceremonies ...
