What is more delicious at Christmas time than a mince pie hot from the oven?

These treats have come to represent the festive season but, in the mid-17th Century, Oliver Cromwell outlawed not only mince pies but also Christmas. The ban was lifted when Charles II reinstated Christmas. By then, the pies had become round in shape and were made using ingredients similar to today's.
