3000 B.C. Newfoundland's first settlers, a native group known as the Maritime Archaic Indians, cross the Strait of Belle Island from Labrador.
50 B.C. The Beothuk arrive in Newfoundland. Eventually the group, which may have numbered less than 1,000 in the 17th and 18th centuries, will be completely wiped out. Some will be killed by Europeans or other native groups, some will die of European diseases, and others will starve to death.
A.D. 1000 Vikings construct a settlement in Vinland, located in present-day Newfoundland.
