Almost 4,000 years ago, King Hammurabi ruled the kingdom of Babylon, a part of Mesopotamia. He gave the world one of its oldest sets of laws.
Archaeologists found the Code (collection of laws) of Hammurabi carved on a black stone slab. Long ago, the stone stood in a public place. The Code said anyone who "was wronged" should stand before this stone and ask that it be read aloud, in order to know the law. (Most Mesopotamians could not read.)
There were 282 laws in the Code. Today, many of them seem harsh. "An eye for an eye" was the rule of the day. People ...
