Dec. 5--WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- As a Marine company commander in Vietnam and a commanding general in the first Gulf War, William G. Keys lived by the service's famed credo: Semper Fi, Latin shorthand for "always faithful."

Now, as president of the Colt gun company, the plain-speaking Pennsylvanian has learned to live with another Latin phrase: Vincit Qui Patitur.

The words, direct from the Colt crest first used in 1851, translate to "he who suffers conquers." For Colt workers, executives and owners, that phrase must bring a sense of hope. They ...
