Theophylline is one of the mainstays of asthma treatment. When used properly. it's safe and effective. However. it has a narrow margin of safety and many things can affect the blood levels. If the blood levels get too high. serious side effects occur; if the levels fall too low. the drug loses it effectiveness.
The greater the blood level is over the therapeutic range ( 10-20 mfiligrams/liter of blood). the more serious the potential side effects. With minor elevations above therapeutic. the side effects include headaches. dizziness. nervousness. insomnia. loss of ...
