Francis Leopold McClintock was born on 8 July 1819 in Dundalk, Co Louth. One of 14 children born to Henry McClintock, the town's customs collector and an ex-officer in the 3rd Dragoon Guards, he had little formal education and entered the Royal Navy as a gentleman volunteer in 1831, just before his 12th birthday. He rose gradually through the ranks and was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1845. When the Gorgon was beached off Montevideo, he distinguished himself in the salvage operations to free the ship and gained further promotion.
