Churches are not usually in the business of commissioning modern works of art for permanent display, which is one reason the new Paula Rego picture in Durham Cathedral is notable.
Paula Rego is a major artist. Tate Britain has 44 of her pictures and is currently mounting an exhibition of her work. A second exhibition is running in Oporto.
