PAVEMENT failures may result from many causes, but the most common is simple lack of maintenance. From the day it is first exposed to traffic, a pavement is subjected to destructive forces. Changes in temperature, precipitation and runoff , settlement, and other natural phenomena stress the pavement structure constantly. When live loads of traffic are added, the assault on the pavement is compounded.
