LIKE one of his famous thistles, wiry and bristling and painful to grasp, Hugh MacDiarmid has been bobbing on a peak above all other Scottish writers for three generations. MacDiarmid was the nom de guerre of a mild-mannered postmaster's son, Christopher Grieve. Since his death in 1978, his reputation has continued to spread ever wider beyond Scotland. He is increasingly recognised for what he truly is--one of the titans of modernism.
