Getting a gauge on voltmeter.

QUESTION: I just purchased a slightly used SUV that has a voltmeter in the instrument panel, along with a couple of other gauges. My previous cars all had a warning light for the battery, and I didn't receive an owner's manual, so I'm trying to make some sense out of the variations that I sometimes see on the gauge.
The printed numbers are 8, 13 and 18, with red bands at the upper and lower ends of the range. Most of the time the needle hovers near the bottom of the upper red band _ about 15 volts. Is this OK? This seems excessive for ...
