The author of this article argues that cultural exchange significantly influenced religious change in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century Britain. This exchange occurred within such movements as Theosophy and Ved5nta, a Hindu sect, and influenced many British intellectuals, particularly in the 1930s, to reconceive of such fundamental Christian beliefs as immortality in collective, rather than individual, terms. This reconceptualization was partly responsible for the decline of psychical research and the rise of Eastern religious philosophy among unorthodox religionists. The ...
