ELISA MONTE'S Via Sacra is undermined by its own ambition. This three-part dance performance tries to take in September 11, colour theories by Josef Albers and the need for trust. It's too much. Monte's dancers can be muscular and alert, but blankness comes over them as they try to embody all those concepts.
Monte, a former soloist with the Martha Graham company, has made dances for Boston Ballet and Alvin Ailey. She uses an American modern dance vocabulary, with touches of Paul Taylor - dancers striding wide, with swimming arms and weight on one hip. ...
