Of all the debates raging around the United States in recent years, one of the most surprisingly rancorous is the one surrounding the sports utility vehicle (SUV). The U.S. public appears to have a love/hate relationship with SUVs. On the one hand, U.S. SUV sales have increased at a startling rate--from a mere 6 percent of all light-duty vehicle (LDV) sales in 1987, to 12 percent in 1995, to an imposing 26 percent in 2004; they are a clear favorite of the car-buying public in the United States.
