2002-2003 was an annus mirabilis for acquisitions by the National Trust, including, most spectacularly, William Morris's Red House, Kent and Tyntesfield, Somerset, the latter acquired with numerous gifts and grants, including an unprecedented 17.25m [pounds sterling] from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and 8m [pounds sterling] from private donations. As the following pages show, 2003-2004 has also been rich in acquisitions of works of art, and comparatively few items have slipped through the net.
