INTRODUCTION

One of the characteristics of modern nationalism has been its use of simplistic symbols. By "nationalism" I refer to the political movements rising in the nineteenth century defining individuals as belonging to common cultural and linguistic traditions, which were largely invented (Anderson, Hobsbawm). Every national movement has defined the perimeters of the linguistic and cultural group constituting the "nation" in simplistic terms.
