AS HOUSEHOLD names go, McKinley Morganfield and Chester Burnett do not ring right; try Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. Both were born in little Clarksdale, deep in the Delta. W.C. Handy, the "father" of all blues, was born there too. And in 1937 Bessie Smith was brought into Clarksdale to die: her car had crashed just outside the town. Her hospital room, now part of a rambling hotel that has lodged any black musician you care to mention, has been left untouched.
