The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department in Kentucky received reports of infections of Shigella sonnei in three children who had attended different day care centers. Some 186 additional infections were reported between Jan 1, 1991, and Jul 15, 1991. Research indicated that attendance at a day care center contributed to 91% of the initial cases of shigellosis in children less than six years of age in day care centers and 47% of the cases in all ages.
