Phillips fills bill for NIU; New AD `right fit'.

Jim Phillips, named Northern Illinois' athletic director on Monday, recalled his last visit to DeKalb before he started making frequent trips there for job interviews.

The visit occurred last spring, after Cary Groth said she was leaving the AD job at Northern for one at Nevada-Reno. Phillips was senior associate athletic director at Notre Dame, but he had his sights set on running a program of his own.
