Rising gasoline prices gave hybrid vehicles a toehold in the American auto market last spring, and suburban Ford, Honda and Toyota dealers expect more buyers to drive them off their lots in 2005.

"We can't deliver immediately," said Gary Vicari, president and general manager of Arlington Toyota, 935 W. Dundee Road in Buffalo Grove, of people wanting the Prius. "As they come in, we fill the orders as fast as we can."
