Getting Started Launch your unit by asking your students to share what they already know about Columbus. They may be familiar with the basic tale: In 1492, Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas when he sailed across the Atlantic. Have a volunteer read the definition of discover from a dictionary. Then ask students: Did Columbus make a voyage of discovery? Why or why not? What other words might we use?
