MPs claimed a record-breaking pounds 78million in expenses last year, it was revealed yesterday.
The 659 members of the House of Commons asked for an average of pounds 118,437 each, on top of their pounds 57,000-plus salaries and generous pension rights.
The expenses bill has soared by pounds 20.5million since 2001-2002, when it was just pounds 57.5million.
But MPs pleaded with voters to accept that they need the massive pile of tax- payers' cash to do their jobs.
