The last great king of Assyria was Assurbanipal. He came to the throne in 668 B.C., after the death of his father, Esarhaddon. Because Esarhaddon had had a difficult time securing his own claim to the throne, he planned very carefully to ensure that the kingship passed peacefully to his sons. In so doing, he devised a plan that was unprecedented in Assyrian history. Rather than leave his empire to one son, he divided it between two sons: Assurbanipal would become king of Assyria, while his older brother, Shamashshum-ukin, would become king of Babylon.
