Oct. 20--Safeway Inc.'s third-quarter profit tumbled 21.4 percent as the financial fallout from the 141-day Southern California strike stretched into a fourth-consecutive reporting period.

The Pleasanton-based supermarket chain earned $159.2 million in the quarter ended Sept. 11, down from $202.5 million in the third quarter of 2003. Total sales were $8.297 billion, up slightly from $8.276 billion in the comparable period.
