Oct. 17--Eli Whitney may have invented the cotton gin, but the guy who's kept the Mid-South industry on its toes, at least the last part of the 20th Century, is W. Stanley Anthony.

Anthony, 59, research leader at USDA's cotton ginning research unit in Stoneville, Miss., has 20 ginning improvement patents.

Eight are licensed to commercial manufacturers and "three are close."
