San Diego canneries hope to lure salmon eaters: manufacturing: Alaska commits funds to boost campaigns by Chicken of the Sea, Bumble Bee.

Hoping to broaden the consumer market for salmon, San Diego's two big seafood companies will launch smoked salmon products in 2005.

Chicken of the Sea International and Bumble Bee Holdings will launch smoked salmon in a pouch products early next year, and use funding from Alaska to promote the product.

"Salmon is a trendy food and everybody wants to eat more of it," said Van Effner, Chicken of the Sea's director of marketing.
