The Portuguese sixteenth-century work on medical deontology, Dialogo da perfeycam e partes que sam necessarias ao bom medico of Jeronimo de Miranda, consists of a conversation between a physician and an elderly professor of rhetoric and Greek. In the central part of the dialogue both characters agree that a competent doctor should be highly proficient in Latin, Greek and Arabic in order to read authoritative texts in the original.
