California's John Wayne Airport Expects to Meet Federal Bag-Screening Deadline.

Oct. 12--A freshly-trained workforce of 150 federal passenger screeners will take its post at John Wayne Airport next week, to be followed by an influx of million-dollar machines to check all baggage in time for a year-end deadline.

Congress ordered the added security because of the Sept. 11 attacks last year.

"We will meet the Dec. 31 deadline for 100 percent checked-bag screening," airport spokesman Justin McCusker said.

Congress recently passed an amendment to the Patriot Act that will allow 40 airports to miss the deadline.
