Oct. 3--The last four years have not been kind to the middle class.

Squeezed by flat or falling pay and rising costs for everything from health insurance to college tuition, many are struggling to stay a step ahead of the working poor.

Even as the U.S. economy continues to churn out fresh millionaires, a tight and changing job market is sending many more people sliding down the income ladder.
