Abstract

Parks and protected areas management involves judging the appropriateness of potential actions according to a particular knowledge framework. Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) is one of many frameworks, but is increasingly being singled out as a fitting complement to scientific knowledge in parks management. The definition of the term traditional ecological knowledge is multi-faceted and is subject to bias, and this paper defines the authors' use of the term as a composite of a Westernised perception and an indigenous perception.
