Adding U.S. real estate to a U.S.-based financial asset portfolio has provided substantial diversification gains in risk-return fficiency for U.S. investors. These gains have been attributed to such factors as real estate's relatively high rate of return and its low correlation with common stock and bonds. This article examines whether real estate assets in other developed countries exhibit these characteristics as well.
