ULSTER Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has been awarded the highest position yet held by an MEP from Northern Ireland.

He topped the poll in a vote to become a European Parliament quaestor - one of the most senior offices in the parliament.

MEPs voted overwhelmingly in favour of Mr Nicholson and he was given the post with an absolute majority.
