Thirteen employees at an Alabama company involved in a battery-breaking operation had elevated blood lead levels in Mar 1991. The employees, who worked with lead plates coated with lead sulfate and lead oxide, were exposed to lead fumes and dust. An investigation revealed that poorly designed equipment, improper use of equipment and poor hygiene practices contributed to the lack of protection from lead exposure.
