AMMONIA is an irritant gas with a sharp odor, both as a natural and a manufactured chemical. It is a key intermediary in the nitrogen cycle in nature, and microbial production is by far the major source of ammonia in the world. Occupational exposure to ammonia occurs to workers in industries involved in its synthesis, formulation, transportation, and use. Additional occupational exposures occur during the use of cleaning products that contain ammonia, as well as during the application of fertilizers, the feeding and handling of cattle, and working in poultry and swine ...
