Prenatal test linked to limb abnormalities. (chorionic villus sampling)

A higher than expected rate of limb abnormalities has been identified among babies born to women who underwent chorionic villus sampling (CVS). This prenatal test has been used for nearly a decade to detect genetic disorders. It has the advantage of providing earlier diagnosis than a similar test called amniocentesis (see HEALTHFACTS, May 1989).

In a study conducted at Chicago's Humana Hospital-Michael Reese, four infants out of 394 whose mothers were given CVS had limb anomalies, including missing fingers, missing nails, and shortened fingers and toes. This ...
