Who was he?

Born John Henry Brodribb in Somerset in 1838, Henry Irving - as he became, when he took his stage name - was one of the great actor-managers of Victorian theatre. He was knighted in 1895 - the first knighthood ever bestowed on an actor. He died in 1905, at the age of 67, two hours after his final performance.
