KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ The story of the Colonnade in Kansas City is the story of a big city that almost was.

From 1903 to 1930, colonnaded apartment buildings dominated Kansas City streetscapes. Their gleaming colossal columns marched down entire blocks, projecting strength, confidence and cosmopolitan urban planning.

For three decades, many of Kansas City's middle and upper-middle classes shed the deep-seated local preference for detached single-family homes, opting instead for an urban, walk-up lifestyle.
