In a previous column, I discussed how North Korean troops had battered unprepared American GIs right after they invaded South Korea on July 25, 1950. Within weeks, we had been driven back to an area around the seaport at Pusan in the southeast corner of Korea. We then used Pusan as our port of entry to bring fresh American troops and supplies into the battle area. By Aug. 1, 1950, we were able to stabilize our lines in defensive positions called the Pusan Perimeter.
