James Hall Sr. loved the water.

When he was 13 years old, he made his first kayak paddle out of wood. As a young man, he began crafting whole kayaks. Even in his older years, Hall hit the water every spare moment he had, swimming, kayaking and driving powerboats.

That passion for the water made Hall's death Monday even more poignant, family members said.
