The Agricultural Research Service, working with Monsanto Co, is testing the effectiveness of transgenic cotton varieties in combatting caterpillars. Monsanto inserted genes from the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) bacterium in ordinary commercial cotton. Like Bt, the transgenic plants produce a protein that paralyzes caterpillars' digestive tracts, causing them to starve.
