The first 100,000 cases of AIDS were reported between Jun 1981 and Aug 1989, and the second 100,000 cases were reported between Sep 1989 and Nov 1991. Only 5% of the first 100,000 cases were attributed to heterosexual exposure. Some 7% of the second 100,000 were attributed to heterosexual contacts. This represents a 44% increase. Some 2.5% of the first 100,000 cases in adults were attributed to blood transfusions, compared to 1.9% in the second 100,000 cases.
