THE rate of babies suffering cot deaths in Wales and England dropped by 13% last year, new figures reveal.

Between 2002 and 2003 the sudden infant death rate fell from 0. 32 per 1, 000 live births to 0. 28, according to the Office for National Statistics.

But the latest figures showed that stillbirths and deaths in infants under one week rose in 2003 -- from 8. 3 per 1, 000 live and stillbirths in 2002 to 8. 5.
