Blighted filbert trees form nutty graveyard in Harrisburg, Ore.

Aug. 16--HARRISBURG, Ore. -- Like stones marking fallen soldiers, the white-painted trunks of more than 250 diseased filbert trees spread before Tony Solis in orderly rows.

Infected with Eastern filbert blight, the hazelnut trees are in the throes of a slow, suffocating death. The painted trunks denote trees that have succumbed to the virulent fungus some growers call the black measles.

Solis said the scene reminds him of Arlington National Cemetery, and of another burial ground closer to home.
