BETTER to lose my empire, King Philip II of Spain was quoted to have exclaimed, than to lose a single soul to the devil. Thus was laid down the guiding idea that helped spread the Catholic Church to the Philippines and to the rest of Spains territories. After several expeditions, Spain secured a permanent foothold in the Far East when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi established Manila in 1571 as the capital of Spains empire in the Philippines.
