Feb. 25--CORK, Ireland--Ken Maher built a promising career in Silicon Valley, but his native Ireland kept calling him home.

Unlike many Irish of past generations, he didn't have to choose between career and country. He could have both.

In December, after more than six years as a design engineer with Cypress Semiconductor in San Jose, Maher moved to the chip maker's small design center in Cork, Ireland's second-largest city and a growing center for electronics companies.
