Oregon's timber industry milled more lumber in 2003 than in any year since 1997, with Lane County leading the way, the state Forestry Department reported recently. Last year's production figures are a useful reminder that there's more going on in the timber industry than mill closures, layoffs and spotted owls. Timber remains a mainstay of the Oregon economy, especially outside the Portland area, and can retain an important place indefinitely.
