The recent eruption of Nyiragongo, one of Africa's most active volcanoes, has highlighted another natural hazard threatening the area.
Lake Kivu, on the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, contains deadly amounts of carbon dioxide and methane gas dissolved at its bottom. If enough lava flowed into the lake, or a volcanic fissure opened underwater, the gases could churn to the surface and threaten to suffocate local residents, scientists say.
