Something may have been rotten in the state of Denmark in Hamlet's day, but Shakespeare's play seems like an episode of "Ozzie and Harriet" compared with the goings-on at the Danish court during the reign of Christian VII in the 18th century.

Take Christian's upbringing, which was placed in the hands of Count Reventlow. The count believed "rote learning to be more important than knowledge," so he "strongly emphasized that the Prince should memorize theories and assertions, just like in a play."

The operative phrase here is "strongly emphasized":
