NEW DELHI, India _ Facing international pressure to ease its standoff with Pakistan, India on Friday turned to an old ally for a billion-dollar weapons deal aimed at strengthening its naval and air forces.

Russia, which enjoyed close relations with India during the Soviet era, agreed to sell New Delhi a refurbished aircraft carrier and lease it two long-range supersonic bombers. For Moscow, analysts said, the deal was less about commerce than a move to thwart the growing influence of the United States.
