AS A FLORIDA TEEN in the mid-'60s, Jim Vaughn rode with the first wave of Jams.

Long before the rest of the world got loose, surfers were snapping up Jams, the long swim trunks sporting big and bright floral prints.

"Everyone had to have Jams," Vaughn said. "They were the hit."

Vaughn grew older - he didn't exactly grow up, since he's a surfer, after all - moved to the Outer Banks and opened a tiny surf shop at Whalebone Junction.

In 1986, a Jams slam struck again.
